Fermentae

Fermentae is the favorite beverage of the dreamworld. It can come in nearly any flavor - hot chocolate or caramel, strawberry or other fruits, blood flavored, almost anything. But how is fermentae made?

Fermentae is a very unique substance, and originates with the diony plant. Diony plants can grow almost anywhere, but tend to be found in arid environments. This is because if the terrain isn't dry when the plant starts to spread there, it soon will be. Diony plants can be very detrimental to farmland. This is because of the way they operate - their root system consists of one very large seed. This seed absorbes moisture, and releases a small amount to the rest of the plant every day. The amount of moisture released never varies, and the plants always grow to the same size. However, the amount of moisture absorbed by the seed can be stupendous - one plant has been rumored to be capable of draining an entire lake. Any dampness around them will be sucked up and stored, pressurized, within the seed. The excess liquid in the seed is turned into a rich nectar. The higher the pressure inside the seed, the richer the nectar (also called fermentae). When the plant dies, the stem eventually decays, and detaches from the seed - releasing all of the stored moisture in an explosive spray. The nectar is germinated with microscopic Diony seeds. Wherever they land, they will begin to absorb moisture and grow a new plant. However, the fermentae has a pleasurable effect when ingested. The first dreamkeepers to learn this died horrible deaths, as the moisture was drained from their bodies over a peroid of weeks by the tiny seeds. Diony nectar, raw, is lethal. However, someone soon discovered a method of making the nectar safe to drink. By either boiling or freezing fermentae, the microscopic seeds are destroyed. Each technique gives the fermentae a different flavor, and is referred to by a different name.. Frozen fermentae is 'Forrey'd', and boiled fermentae is 'Shayed'. After learning this, more experimentation began with the beverage. People tried growing seeds in different types of liquid - Diony can grow in fruit juice, cappuchino, saltwater, gravy, jelly, anything that contains moisture. The nectar will develope a flavor based on the moisture it is created from. The techniques for creating and purifying different flavors has become very refined over the ages.
